Beethoven from Lapland

A concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven from Enontekiö Church in Finnish Lapland

Pianist Paavali Jumppanen and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto have been musical collaborators for about 25 years, in many different ways. The ten Sonatas for piano and violin by Ludwig van Beethoven form the core of their common repertoire. In this concert from Enontekiö Church, they will perform Sonata nr. 5 F Major ’Spring Sonata’ and nr. 7 C Minor.

Beethoven is one of the great favourites of concert audiences worldwide. His reputation formed already during his own lifetime. First, with his chamber music, he won over many amateur musicians playing within the confines of their homes; then the public spaces with his symphonies. Despite growing increasingly deaf over the years, he managed to become a force that would influence nearly all of the music written after him.

Paavali Jumppanen, piano

Paavali is an internationally renowned interpreter of Beethoven’s music, and the first Finnish pianist to have recorded all 32 of the composer’s Piano Sonatas. During this year, he devotes his time to this music he loves, performing solo piano works, chamber music, and concertos in several concert cycles in Finland and abroad. In the Lapland region, Jumppanen has been active especially as chairperson of the artistic board of Väyläfestival.

Jaakko Kuusisto, viulu

Jaakko is one of the most versatile musicians in Finland, equally at home in many musical styles from baroque to jazz. He currently serves as artistic director of Oulu Music Festival, and chief conductor of Kuopio Symphony Orchestra. He is the composer of about 40 works; including a highly successful Violin Concerto, and the opera ’Ice’ for Finnish National Opera.
