Young Conductors’ Final Concert

The closing concert for young conductors, which will demonstrate their achievements during their week with the Lead! Foundation Academy in the inaugural year of the Fiskars Summer Festival.

Also participating in the concert are leading conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste and top international violinist Pekka Kuusisto.

Jukka-Pekka Saraste, conductor

Jukka-Pekka Saraste has established himself as one of the outstanding conductors of his generation, demonstrating remarkable musical depth and integrity. Saraste began his career as a violinist before training as a conductor with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy. Saraste has served as Chief Conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and was Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony. He is a founding member of LEAD! Foundation Academy.

Pekka Kuusisto, violin

Violinist, conductor and composer Pekka Kuusisto is renowned for his artistic freedom and fresh approach to repertoire. He is Artistic Partner with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Artistic Best Friend of Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and Artistic Director of the Australian ACO Collective. Kuusisto is an enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music as well as a gifted improviser, and he regularly engages with people across the artistic spectrum.

Lohja City Orchestra

Lohja City Orchestra was established in 1964. The only professional orchestra in the western Uusimaa region, it permanently employs 12 musicians and is often expanded into a chamber orchestra or symphony orchestra with freelance musicians. As of autumn 2020, the Artistic Director of the orchestra will be Jukka Untamala. The leader of the orchestra is Tero Latvala.

The home of the orchestra is the Laurentius Hall in Lohja, but it maintains a strong regional presence. It regularly visits such events as the Loviisa Sibelius Festival, Sounds of Sipoo, the Lux Musicae festival in Siuntio, and the LEAD! Foundation’s summer festival in Fiskars. The orchestra has played with such artists as Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Rolando Villazòn, Andrea Boccelli and the Il Divo tenor group.

The orchestra collaborates with municipalities, parishes, organizations and various cultural operators. In addition to the classical basis, its diverse repertoire includes popular music, movie soundtracks and children’s music. Lohja City Orchestra is also a trusted partner of many leading Finnish choirs.
